I captured Daily Dessert with my dear friend and longtime collaborator, pastry chef Caroline Schiff. The book is divided into 8 chapters for all the different occasions when we eat dessert. Caroline entrusted me to design a different lighting scenario to illustrate each chapter: "sunny day sweets," "cozy day confections," "celebration sweets," etc... I loved the challenge of developing the different light and it offered me the opportunity to showcase my diverse and varied approach to lighting.
It was an ambitious project aiming to capture 100+ recipes in 8 studio shoot days. We also shot one day of portraits/lifestyle imagery in and around Caroline's apartment. Our pre-production process was thorough, we established a shot list and creative direction for every shot before each shoot day. The shoot focused on executing established creative ideas, we were not using time on set to develop new ideas. This approach enabled us operate efficiently on set and work through 10-14 recipes per day.
We had an incredible crew! Caroline was on set styling and lending her hands for many shots. Steph De Luca was our prop/set stylist and she did a wonderful job translating Caroline's aesthetic into props and sets. We had three food stylists in the kitchen, Kayla Wong, Ben Weiner, and Shannon Dowling, and every dish looked great when it arrived on set. Jessica Meter produced the shoot, developing the shot list and keeping the entire team on schedule.
